Testimony of Ricarda Ganjam at Confirmation Hearing for Steve Bumbaugh
Testimony of Ricarda Ganjam, Board member
DC Public Charter School Board
DC Council Committee on Education
June 9, 2017
Thank you Chairman Grosso and other members of the Committee for the opportunity to testify today. My name is Ricarda Ganjam and I am a member of the DC Public Charter School Board.
I am pleased to be here today in support of my fellow board member Steve Bumbaugh’s re-nomination. Steve has been an outstanding member of our board for the last three years and I hope you will vote to continue his tenure.
DC’s public charter school sector has made leaps and bounds in the three years since Steve’s appointment. Enrollment has grown by thousands of students, discipline rates have decreased, the Board has approved multiple schools on track to serve the most vulnerable populations and more schools than ever have achieved Tier 1 status.
Throughout Steve’s career, he has demonstrated results in addressing the needs of the most vulnerable students. In previous roles, Steve has been a teacher, worked in education nonprofits and led CityBridge’s Breakthrough Schools DC competition. Currently, Steve is bringing his experiences as a Vice President of Career and College access at College Board to DC PCSB, serving as a real asset as our board tries to navigate the role and scope of adult education across the city. The common thread in Steve’s career is that he is dedicated to addressing the challenges associated with students experiencing poverty.
Serving with Steve has been an enriching experience for me as a board member. Steve always asks insightful questions that get to the heart of what is best for our city. As a native Washingtonian and a parent, he does not hesitate to lift the voices families in DC on issues ranging from educational models to student discipline. Steve is passionate about not just focusing on low performing schools to get better but also about pushing high quality schools to raise their standards even further.
In conclusion, Steve brings a wealth of experience to the DC Public Charter School Board. His perspectives and approach toward our City’s education sector is highly valued amongst our colleagues. I ask that the Committee and full Council support Steve’s nomination so that we can continue the public charter school sector has achieved.
