Speaking at a U.S. House Oversight and Government Committee hearing, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton reaffirmed her support for DC public charter schools and urged lawmakers to increase the funding.

"Children cannot wait until traditional public schools meet the necessary standards," said Norton. "DC charter schools have higher educational achievement and attainment than DCPS [traditional school system]. DC charter schools outperform DCPS across traditionally disadvantaged groups, including African-American and low-income students, and have a higher percentage of such students, precisely the students the DC voucher program was ostensibly designed to serve. 60 percent of DC charter school students are proficient in math and 53.4 percent are proficient in reading. 79 percent of DC charter students graduate."

We appreciate Congresswoman Norton’s support to ensure DC students and families have quality public education options available.
