The DC Public Charter School Board would like to say farewell to Mayor Vincent C. Gray and thank him for his hard work and dedication to expand access to quality educational choices for DC students and families.

During Mayor Gray’s tenure, DC public charter schools added thousands of high-quality, Tier 1 seats and opened dozens of new schools offering unique and innovative programs, such as language immersion, Montessori and adult education. Student performance also continued to increase, with scores on the DC CAS growing in public charter schools each of the past four years.

We are also grateful that Mayor Gray saw charters as full partners in the transformation of education in DC. He would monthly bring together myself, Chancellor Henderson, and Deputy Mayor for Education Abigail Smith to discuss education issues in the city and foster collaboration. He was also instrumental in the creation of DC’s common lottery, MySchool DC.

In large part due to these efforts, DC public schools, both charter and traditional, are once again growing and bringing families back to the District. We are thankful for his service and commitment to education in DC. As we say farewell to Mayor Gray, we also welcome Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser. PCSB looks forward to the continued support from the upcoming administration.

We thank him for his hard work and dedication to expand access to quality educational choices for DC students and families.
