It Takes a City: DC Public Charter Students Head Back to School

As Students Head Back to School, Three New Public Charter Schools Open

Board Hosts #ItTakesaCity Instagram Photo Challenge

Washington, DC — As students across the District return to school, three new public charter schools – a computer-science middle school in Ward 7, an all-boys college prep school in Ward 7 and an adult English as a Second Language school in Ward 1 - will welcome students for the first time. This year more than 44,000 students will attend one of the 123 public charter schools operated by one of the 66 nonprofits across the city. 2018-19 School Year Highlights

Three New Innovative Schools Open  

  • Digital Pioneers Academy is a computer-science focused middle school located in Ward 7. The school opened its doors on August 13 to more than 120 6th grade students.
  • The Family Place is an adult English as a Second Language school located in Ward 1. They will offer English as a Second Language, workforce training and literacy development education to low-income, limited English proficient adults in the District.
  • Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys is an all-boys college-preparatory middle school located in Ward 7. Today they will welcome 63 4th-grade boys to their new school.

Schools Expanding

The following schools will expand their quality programs by adding a new grade this school year:

  • Breakthrough Montessori - will educate students in the 1st grade
  • Center City PCS – Trinidad - will educate students in PK3
  • Creative Minds International PCS - will educate students in the 8th grade
  • DC Prep PCS - Anacostia Elementary School - will educate students in the 2nd grade
  • District of Columbia International School - will educate students in the 11th grade
  • Ingenuity Prep PCS - will educate students in the 5th grade
  • Lee Montessori PCS - will educate students in the 5th grade
  • Monument Academy PCS - will educate students in the 8th grade
  • Rocketship PCS - Legacy Prep - will educate students in the 3rd grade
  • Rocketship PCS - Rise Academy - will educate students in the 4th grade
  • Sela PCS - will educate students in the 5th grade
  • Two Rivers PCS - Young - will educate students in the 4th grade
  • Washington Leadership Academy PCS - will educate students in the 11th grade

New Campuses  

  • AppleTree Early Learning Center PCS - Parklands at THEARC - will educate PK3 and PK4 students at 1801 Mississippi Ave SE
  • ​Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom PCS: East End - will educate students in PK3-K at 5600 East Capitol St NE.
  • Friendship PCS: Southeast Middle - will educate students in grades 4 - 6.

New Campus Configurations  

  • Cesar Chavez PCS for Public Policy Parkside Middle School - will educate students in grades 7 and 8
  • Friendship PCS -Southeast Elementary - will educate students in grades PK3-3
  • Friendship PCS - Technology Preparatory Middle School - will educate students in grades 7-8
  • SEED PCS of Washington, DC - will educate students in grades 7-12
