DC Public Charter School Students Compete in DC’s First Statewide Math Competition

June 17, 2026

The clock was ticking and pencils were moving during the inaugural Capital Math Classic, DC’s first statewide student math competition hosted by EmpowerK12 and the Washington Nationals.

On May 14, math took center stage as students in grades 3–12 from across the District teamed up to solve challenging problems, compete for victory, and most importantly, have fun doing what they love.

The competition featured two divisions: an Elementary Division for grades 3–5 and a Secondary Division for students in grades 6–8 and 9–12. Teams had 45 minutes to answer as many questions correctly as possible, putting their math skills and teamwork to the test while parents and guardians cheered them on from the sidelines.

Tomeika Bowden, Chief External Affairs Officer, represented DC PCSB at the event and helped give the scholars the push they needed to succeed under pressure.

“Every champion has moments where things get tough. One hard problem does not define your whole game. Shake it off and keep moving,” said Bowden.

Quinton, a fourth-grade student from KIPP DC Spring Academy PCS, said he had a blast competing alongside his classmates.

“Answering questions [is the most fun part.] It’s gotten so intense,” said Quinton.

Math may not always have the reputation of being the easiest subject in school, but events like the Capital Math Classic show just how exciting and rewarding it can be for students who enjoy the challenge. When asked what advice he would give to students who think math is too difficult, Quinton says

“Try your best and never give up.”
