Washington, D.C. — The D.C. Public Charter School Board (PCSB) today released its 2010 Application Guidelines for establishing a public charter school in the District of Columbia.  The guidelines provide guidance to organizations seeking to apply to open a new charter school or convert a traditional, parochial or private school. The application deadline is February 1, 2010.  Approved schools would be authorized to open in the fall of 2011.

“The PCSB is nationally recognized for its rigorous application process. With the existing 57 schools on 99 campuses, any new applications will have to be exceptional and compliment existing offerings or fill an unmet need,” said Board Chair Tom Nida.

Prospective applicants may download the application guidelines from the Board’s website or come into the PCSB offices to pick up a copy.  The PCSB will host two information sessions for prospective applicants on November 12 and December 10.  For more information about the application process, visit the PCSB website at www.dcpubliccharter.com.

The D.C. Public Charter School Board currently oversees 57 public charter schools on 99 campuses, serving more than 28,000 students living in every ward of the city.  Public charter schools now serve 38% of all public school students in Washington, D.C.
