Celebrating 30 Years of Innovation, Generations of Impact

July 30, 2026

For three decades, public charter schools have expanded educational opportunities for students and families across Washington, DC. Today, nearly half of the city's public school students attend a public charter school, a testament to the innovation, dedication, and partnership that continue to shape the sector.

DC PCSB is proud to share its 2026 Annual Report, commemorating 30 years of public charter schools in the District while highlighting the progress made during SY 2025–26. More than a reflection on the past year, the report looks ahead to the future of public charter education and DC PCSB's role in ensuring schools continue to thrive.

The report spotlights the people who make DC's public charter school community so special. You'll read inspiring stories of alumni who returned to work at the schools that helped shape their futures, parents serving as leaders on charter school boards, and students whose artwork is featured throughout the publication. Together, their stories remind us that the impact of public charter schools extends far beyond the classroom.

Inside the report, you'll also find:

  • Public charter schools serving 47,801 students, representing 48.2% of all public school students in Washington, DC.
  • Progress on DC PCSB's 2025–2028 Strategic Roadmap
  • Updates on academic accountability, financial oversight, and governance
  • Highlights of the partnerships that help strengthen schools and improve outcomes for students across the District

As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we're honoring the achievements of the past while building a stronger foundation for the future. We invite you to explore the stories, data, and milestones that reflect 30 years of innovation, and the generations of impact still to come.
