2018 School Quality Reports Released

Every year, we release our School Quality Reports, which assess the academic and non-academic performance of all public charter schools across Washington, DC.
For the third consecutive year, more students are attending a high-performing public charter school.

Congratulations to the Tier 1 Schools!

As a multilingual and multicultural family, a Spanish language and cultural immersion education was important to us. However, none of our neighborhood schools offer these options. We are fortunate to have had the choice to attend the Latin American Montessori Bilingual PCS. - Sherrell Pyatt Harrison, LAMB PCS parent

How an AppleTree Early Learning Center PCS Parent Found a Great School for Her Child and a Great Place to Work for Herself

Jeralyn Wiley is an AppleTree Early Learning Center PCS - Columbia Heights parent who lives in Ward 8 with her two children - one in sixth grade and the other in PK4. Here is her story: "I sought a school that could accommodate one’s transition to middle school, while ensuring the other was exceptionally prepared, both cognitively and emotionally for Kindergarten. Knowing this would be a challenge, I focused heavily on finding a great fit for my PK4 student first. By using the DC Public Charter School Board’s School Quality Report and many school visits to my top choices, I knew I wanted him in an AppleTree classroom. I was so impressed by the way the educators went the extra mile to work with Achievement Prep PCS's Kindergarten teachers to continue to challenge my son after he tested out of PK4 standards[...I]n June 2017, I decided to join the AppleTree Family as a Resident Teacher at [AppleTree Early Learning Center's] Douglas Knoll campus. It is such a joy to work everyday with individuals who serve both the students and families of the District’s most underserved wards. Many thanks to the DC Public Charter School Board for their work in ensuring parents are informed about the choices available to them in obtaining a quality education for their children. Additional thanks to my AppleTree colleagues for the opportunity to serve alongside you in our commitment to closing the achievement gap and preparing our students with the social, emotional, and cognitive skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten and beyond!"

Congratulations to the following AppleTree Early Learning Center PCS campuses for achieving Tier 1 status (their 2018 School Quality Reports are linked): Columbia Heights, Lincoln Park, Oklahoma Avenue, and Southwest

DCI Principal Appreciates the Value of School Choice

Photo Credit: District of Columbia International School

Deidra Bailey, a principal at District of Columbia International School (DCI), appreciates school choice, especially in DC. She enjoys seeing how different school programs across the city are serving students from different backgrounds who all need different things. Deidra feels that public charter schools are able to open doors for student learning and growth, which compelled her to join the DCI team, where her students gain fluency in a second language and follow an International Baccalaureate curriculum. She believes school choice is not just about having more choices; it is about having the right choices and finding the best fit for individual students.
