Our opening theme, “Back to Purpose: Starting Strong for Students,” reminded us that while every new school year brings possibilities, this one comes with both excitement and weight. Chair Shantelle Wright reflected on the challenges families and schools face in the broader context of our city, while lifting up the resilience of school leaders and families who continue to show up for students. “Our mission remains steady and clear: to ensure every student in the District has access to a quality public education,” she affirmed.
Board members also recommitted to asking the right questions, engaging with community voices, and holding ourselves to the same high expectations we set for schools. As Chair Wright emphasized, “This Board is committed to upholding the promise of public charter schools for all students.”
Dr. Michelle Walker-Davis, Executive Director, added that back-to-school is a time of both excitement and purpose. She celebrated recent gains in DC CAPE results as proof of what’s possible when schools, families, and communities work together. She also outlined how our commitments as an authorizer come to life: maintaining high standards, supporting schools meaningfully, and ensuring transparency through updates on student achievement, financial oversight, and governance throughout the year.
As we move forward, our focus remains clear: quality, fairness, and partnership. Together, we can ensure a strong start and a stronger future for every student in Washington, DC.
