DC Public Charter School Board to Host Information Session for Prospective Charter Applicants on November 14

PCSB will host an information session for prospective charter school applicants on Thursday, November 14 at 6 p.m. at the Board's offices.

The information session will give prospective applicants more information about PCSB, the application guidelines and review process and provide an opportunity to ask questions.

This summer, PCSB released guidelines outlining the requirements to open a new charter school (or convert a traditional, parochial or private school). The deadline to apply is March 3, 2014 by 5 p.m.
Applications selected for approval will open at the start of the school year in the subsequent calendar year, i.e. schools applying in March 2014 can open in August 2015.

'Tis the (Application) Season - Minting New Charter Schools

They arrived in our Columbia Heights office clutching heavy binders and hopes and dreams - nine groups looking to start new charter schools in DC turned in their applications this month.

The work that starts now over the next several weeks -- staff reading the thick binders, applicants prepping for their capacity interview -- will all come together May 20 when our Board votes on the applications. Their votes will mint another set of charter school founders, and the decision will alter the lives of the founders -- and hopefully, future DC schoolchildren.

"I remember it like it was yesterday," said DC Prep founder and former Chief Executive Officer Emily Lawson.  She started out just like the groups who recently turned in applications -- hopeful and clutching a binder full of written plans to transform generations of boys and girls into future high-achieving scholars (or "Preppies", as they are called at DC Prep).

What was it like preparing the application? Did she think ten years ago that the school would be where it is today?

During this application season, PCSBlog is launching an interview series featuring several school founders about what it was like, from the inside, to apply to open a new charter school.

'Tis the (Application) season.
