Important new report on teacher retention

The New Teacher Project, known for their pathbreaking reports on the teaching profession (such as the Widget Effect and Unintended Consequences) has produced another seminal piece of work.  The Irreplaceables focuses on retention of the highest-performing teachers, finding that "the best and worst performing teachers leave urban schools at strikingly similar rates".   Quoting from Jay Matthews, "The researchers discovered that only 47 percent of high-performing teachers said they were praised by their bosses for their good work. Only 26 percent were encouraged to take leadership roles. And just 37 percent were urged to stay when contemplating other assignments."  Many DC charters struggle with teacher retention.  This report offers solid recommendations -- many of them basic common sense -- for how to retain high-performing teachers.
